Filmfare Exclusive: Abhay Deol says he feared stardom
2 min readAbhay Deol might be a part of one of the most iconic film families in Bollywood, but he carved a path for himself that sets him apart from his contemporaries. With films like Dev D, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! and Socha Na Tha, he was continuously proving his calibre as an actor and showing that he was not afraid of taking risks. However, at the peak of his career, Deol took a break and shifted to New York for a year. In a conversation with Jitesh Pillaai, Editor-in-Chief, Filmfare for the show In The Ring With Filmfare, Abhay opened up about this decision and expressed that he did not know how to deal with the attention coming his way. He also revealed that he feared stardom.
The actor stated, “I did not know how to deal with it. It scared me. All the things that I heard growing up, all the things that I had seen and read- you also read about your family in the press. It just all came heavy down on me. Everything was too much for me.”
He shared further, “I was scared of stardom. What I have seen of stardom was very negative. You don’t have a personal life and you sacrifice a lot. I thought – if I become a star then it’s the end of me. I think it is better to say that there were good and bad experiences. Being in the film industry is so competitive. When you find out that those who have your best interest, don’t, it hits you hard in that sense. Because you are more vulnerable, you are in the public eye, it’s an insecure profession, it’s not a 9-5 job.”
Abhay Deol further expressed that people saying or doing things against someone affects him. “I was reminded of the trauma of what the industry could do to someone who is in the limelight. That’s why I stepped back,” he continued. Abhay Deol was last seen in the web-series Trial By Fire.
