Russo Brothers to shoot Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars back to back

The Russo Brothers – Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, are returning to direct films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The director duo has been tasked with helming the highly-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The films are set to arrive in 2026 and 2027, respectively. While much isn’t known about the projects, it looks like the makers are going with a “very radical” approach to make the films happen.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter during the red carpet premiere of the Russo Brothers’ latest film, The Electric State in Los Angeles, Joe Russo shared “I think these movies are going to be a surprise to people. We found a way into the story that’s very exciting to us. But we think it’s very radical. I think it’s going to challenge audiences.”

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are being shot back-to-back

Opening up about the challenges of shooting the upcoming MCU films, Anthony Russo shared, “It’s all in London, we’re shooting them fairly back to back.”

He further added, “It’s a lot of work again, we may or may not survive, we’ll see. We’re very excited about it, we found a way into the story that we think is going to be challenging for audiences, and challenging for us to execute. It’s really exciting to us, it gets us out of bed to do it.”

Last year Joe had reportedly shared that while they’re looking to shoot the films on a tight schedule, they will take longer principal photography breaks between Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr., best known for his portrayal of Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the MCU, will take on the role of the villain Victor Von Doom in both Doomsday and Secret Wars. Rumours of Chris Evans, who played Captain America making a return in a new role after his cameo as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine are also doing the rounds.

With production set to begin this summer, further details about the projects are awaited.
