Exclusive: Priyamani On Hateful Remarks She Got For Her Inter Faith Marriage

Priyamani, who received fame and appreciation for films and series such as Chennai Express, Jawan and The Family Man, recently joined Filmfare for an exclusive chat for the show In The Ring With Filmfare.
During her conversation with Filmfare’s Editor-In-Chief Jitesh Pillaai, the actress opened up about the online trolling and hate comments she received for her interfaith marriage. Priyamani got married to filmmaker Mustafa Raj in 2017. She announced her engagement news on Facebook back then and received a lot of hateful comments for it.
The Jawan actor told Filmfare, ” When I announced my engagement, I always thought I wanted to share this happy moment with people whom I honestly believed genuinely cared for me. By that, I meant the audience. Obviously, your family and friends are there. But I thought, being a media person, and being adored by a lot of people, I thought I would want to share the happy news that I am getting engaged.”
She continued, “And I don’t know for what rhyme or reason, this unnecessary hate happened and this love jihad thing happened. They even went to the extent of saying that, tomorrow when your kids are born, they will join ISIS. It did take a toll on me because I understand that I belong to the media and the film industry, you can say what you want to say to me. But why do you want to attack somebody who is not at all a part of these things? You don’t even know who that person is. It took a toll on me for 2-3 days because I kept getting a lot of messages. Even now, when I post something with him, nine out of ten comments will be about our religion or caste.”
She concluded, “I don’t want to give importance and add fuel to the fire. Earlier I reacted and people got their one minute of fame.”
On the work front, Priyamani was recently seen in the Malayalam thriller Officer On Duty. She will now be seen in Jana Nayagan which is actor Vijay’s final film before he retires and join politics.
