Exclusive: Kiran Rao playfully admits to torturing Aamir Khan on Dhobi Ghat

In a recent episode of In the Ring with Filmfare, Kiran Rao spoke about her experience directing her first feature film, Dhobi Ghat. Before this, she worked as an assistant director on the critically acclaimed Lagaan (2001), directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. She was also involved in the production of other notable films such as Swades (2004) and Monsoon Wedding (2001) in various capacities.

When asked about directing her spouse, Kiran Rao shared: “I tortured him (Aamir) a little bit. He would give me some suggestions, and I’d be like, ‘No, do it like this.’ Since it was my first film and we had a very tiny budget—a micro-budget—there was this constant panic that I wouldn’t get to do what I wanted. I was patient with everybody else because, obviously, I couldn’t shout at everyone—I had to show that I knew what I was doing. But with Aamir, I could snap because he’s my husband.”

Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan married in 2005 and became proud parents to their son Azad in 2011. Although they decided to part ways in 2021, their bond remains strong, and they continue to collaborate professionally. Recently, Aamir produced Kiran’s film Laapataa Ladies, showcasing their enduring partnership.
