EXCLUSIVE: Shabana Azmi on Re-Releases: âœHumlog kahani sochte hi nahiâ

Shabana Azmi is all set to star in Netflix’s Dabba Cartel, a crime drama series about a women-run dabba service that becomes a front for a drug cartel. The star joins a powerhouse ensemble that includes Jyotika, Shalini Pandey, Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, Gajraj Rao and others. In an exclusive chat ahead of the show’s release, Azmi opened up about what viewers are watching today.
When asked about the ongoing re-release trend with several iconic films enjoying continued appreciation while some of the newer films miss the mark, Shabana Azmi shared, “I think we are floundering, and we don’t know which way to go. The earlier belief was that if you do a formula film and you have stars, they’ll bring in the audiences, the first week will go well and the rest is history. That hasn’t worked. Meanwhile, OTT has its own audience. We are really trying to get a hold of what to do”
Explaining that re-releases are a great way to gauge what works, the actress added, “Bringing in re-releases is a very good idea because if they work, then we’ll know that there’s a certain thing that works – and that’s the content. Forget about everything and concentrate on the content. Humlog kahani sochte hi nahi hai. Humlog banate hai projects. Ek yaha se ajayega, dusra waha se aur hum woh bana lete hai. That is something we should get away from.”
“We should get into doing the pre-production for two years and then making a film in six months. Earlier we used to do pre-production for a month and shoot films for four years. That’s why we had so many hits and misses. This is the time for us to really and truly think about what we’re doing and where we’re going in the Hindi film industry at least.,” she concludes, musing on how the industry can get back on track.
