Actress Jyotika, who made her comeback to showbiz after 26 years with Srikanth and Shaitaan, will be seen next in Dabba Cartel. She will be essaying the role of a housewife of a businessman, who has sacrificed her career to focus on her family. The actress’ life, too, has a similar story.
She took a break from movies after tying the knot to Suriya in 2006. In a recent interview, the actress opened up about marrying the actor and stopping work at 28. Jyotika also revealed that despite being in the industry for so many decades, she faces discrimination for being a woman at times.
She said, “It seems like an everyday thing. I’m married to a superstar. So, I face it every now and then, till date. I see it happening even during interviews. If I say that I feel lucky to have married Suriya, people say that he’s a really nice guy. If he says that he feels lucky to have married a nice woman, it suddenly becomes something like Suriya is such a nice guy that he’s thinking of his wife.”
The actress continued, “You experience casual sexism even when it comes to materialistic things. I may buy a car but someone else is supposed to press the button and check the features out. It’s now a part of daily life. There are hundreds of instances that I can point out.” She then shared that sometimes, the discrimination reaches a level where she has an identity crisis.
Meanwhile, she also opened up about her career and revealed that she was extremely happy in the South. “I was extremely happy in the South. I have done some of my best roles there and I could only be glad that I was part of South films. Because I’m not sure if I had probably got those roles if I had worked in Hindi. In fact, I was married and stopped working at 28 and then got back to films when I was 35. And I did see a lot of prominent roles coming up my way in Tamil where I played the protagonist. And here I am in Hindi now where I am again receiving a very warm welcome. So, no complaints. I am very happy with the way the career has shaped.”
