1 min read

Director Ram Gopal Varma has been sentenced to three months imprisonment in a cheque bounce case from 2018. He has been found guilty of an offense under the Negotiable Instruments Act. It addresses checks that are dishonored because they are either overwritten or the account has insufficient money. For those unaware, the cheque bounce case against him was filed in 2018 by a company called Shree. It was represented by Maheshchandra Mishra and was directed against the filmmaker’s company.

The verdict was originally scheduled for January 21, 2025. The same was delayed due to Ram Gopal Varma’s absence from the Andheri Magistrate court. In response to his behaviour, the magistrate issued a non-bailable warrant for his arrest.

According to a leading Bollywood news portal, the magistrate was quoted saying, “No question of set-off under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 as the accused has not spent any period in custody during the trial.” He has also been directed by the court to pay Rs 3.72 lakh in compensation to the complainant within three months. Varma may have to serve an additional three months in jail if he fails to do so.
