Sweet Dreams Movie Review: Good performances carry the film

2 min read

Sweet Dreams brings an intriguing and thought-provoking premise, diving into questions about the nature of dreams, happiness, and reality. The film asks if life should be all about chasing dreams, whether dreams offer a true sense of fulfillment, and if pursuing them is worth reshaping our reality. These are fascinating questions, and the film does an admirable job of drawing viewers into this exploration.

At the heart of the story are Kenny (Amol Parashar) and Dia (Mithila Palkar), two characters who meet in their dreams and slowly try to bridge the gap between their dream world and the real one. Their connection feels genuine and heartfelt, thanks in part to the palpable chemistry between Parashar and Palkar. Their performances are full of charm, with Parashar bringing an effortless sincerity to his portrayal of Kenny, a man struggling to find meaning in his life, while Palkar imbues Dia with a sense of free-spirited vulnerability that makes her relatable to anyone who’s uncertain about their place in the world. Bengali actress Sauraseni Maitra too makes a mark as the level-headed girl Kenny ideally should be with.

Despite the actors’ strong performances, Sweet Dreams, directed by Victor Mukherjee, falters in its execution, particularly in its treatment of the dream-versus-reality concept. While the film sets up an engaging narrative, it doesn’t fully immerse us in the dreamy atmosphere it promises. There are moments that should have felt more ethereal or fantastical, yet the film’s attempt to balance its weighty themes with its romantic arc doesn’t quite succeed in giving us the dreamy, swooning romance we might have hoped for. Instead, the film leans into its attempts to be preachy, which detracts from the emotional resonance it could have otherwise had.

The film’s settings, bonfires, getaways to Alibaug, charming exhibitions, offer plenty of opportunities for romance, but Sweet Dreams doesn’t quite capitalise on these picturesque moments. Instead of creating a dreamy, romantic escape, it feels like the story gets lost in its message, leaving us with a sense of emotional dissatisfaction at the end. The unanswered questions about whether Dia and Kenny will find each other, or whether they will ultimately find happiness, linger, leaving the viewer with an unsatiated feeling, as if something was just out of reach.

Still, there is a certain whimsical charm to Sweet Dreams, and it does have a unique appeal, especially for those drawn to films that delve into the uncertainty and confusion of modern life. The film leaves you wondering, like the characters themselves, about what comes next. Ultimately, Sweet Dreams succeeds in sparking curiosity and introspection, but it struggles to fully deliver on the romantic fantasy it hints at. Despite its flaws, it remains an interesting watch, one that will resonate with viewers who are more focused on the journey of self-discovery than the destination. It’s currently streaming on Disney+Hotstar.Sweet Dreams is film which questions the dream vs reality paradox. Continue reading …Read More
