Why Did Gene Hackman Walk Away From The Spotlight? Details Revealed

2 min read

Gene Hackman was one of Hollywood’s most revered actors, known for iconic roles in The French Connection (1971), Superman (1978), Mississippi Burning (1988) and Unforgiven (1992), having won 2 Oscars for his performances as well. Hackman delivered powerful performances that defined generations of cinema. But he quietly retired from the industry after a career spanning over five decades.

By the early 2000s, Hackman — who was then in his 70s — had made the decision to retire. The no-nonsense actor had already grown disenchanted with the grind of Hollywood, even if his last movie, Welcome to Mooseport (2004), was a light-hearted political comedy. He gave two reasons for leaving in interviews: he wanted a quieter life and his recurring health issues related to his heart. He had married his wife Betsy Arakawa in 1991. During the last 2 decades, Hackman and Arakawa stay away from the limelight, living a quiet life in New Mexico.

Hackman never recovered, in contrast to many of his contemporaries. He chose to become a writer instead, co-authoring a number of historical fiction books like Escape From Andersonville. Since then, he lived quietly in Santa Fe, New Mexico mostly avoiding public appearances, preferring the seclusion of a writer’s existence. Locals from Santa Fe have often shared on social media that Hackman and his wife would be spotted fishing, painting and writing. It was a life in complete contrast to his breakneck career on American TV during the 60s and his roles in thrillers and action films of the 70s.

Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa and their pet dog passed away under unknown circumstances in their home on February 27. Their bodies were discovered by the local police who issued a statement that no foul play was suspected in their deaths. Hackman, who had literally, walked away from his public life, has passed away in equally mysterious circumstances. Even though he hadn’t acted in a film for over 2 decades, his legacy from the 70s, 80s and 90s classics still stands the test of time and is proof that the world of cinema has lost a giant.
